According to the Post-Crescent, construction might begin in fall 2015, with construction lasting six to 18 months. The Post-Crescent stated, “”The city wants to bring a big retailer that comes and delivers things to the area, and Amazon would be ideal, to give it easier access to Madison’s residents.” On June 26, the Post-Crescent said the city will present an 18-month lease plan to Amazon to determine if and the how many buildings are included in the contract. “The lease is supposed to be in place in two years or so and a contract would be in place in a little longer than that,” Mayor Paul Soglin said. Amazon is also looking to begin construction of the first Phase of what it says will be a first-of-its kind distribution center in the Midwest, according to the Post-Crescent and the Washington Post. Based on what’s being described, this would be similar to the one that recently opened in Kansas City, Kansas but instead would be in Madison, Wisconsin and is set to include 100,000 square feet of retail as well as a 12,000 square foot event center as well as other office and retail space. The development has been in the works for the last two years and should be completed in the first year of next year. According to the Post-Crescent, construction on the $70 million facility will start next year and include an 8,500 sq. ft. high-rise office building that will be built on an already constructed parking lot and a 40-acre agricultural site in the city.
According to the New York Times , Amazon intends to break ground on a new distribution center in September. The New York Times article talks about the development site as being “just a few miles away from its offices in Seattle,” and the Post-Crescent wrote that “the Amazon location is expected to allow employees to live a closer distance from shipping and distribution facilities and cut out costs for company workers.” To read the full New York Times article head to the Post-Crescent here .
The Madison Post-Crescent wrote that the Amazon lease for the distribution center could include one or two buildings at the site, with the other being a “secondary corporate office, such as an engineering and design firm to create the design process and other operations.” Other construction related projects also include a construction yard on the south shore, which could allow the building to house a warehouse that would also house shipping operations for the distribution company, the Post-Crescent wrote.
According to information posted on the Madison.com blog, the site could also feature a restaurant to house local employees during work hours.
