Dallas has been getting rid of players all year long. No, this isn’t an accident, but there is a very good chance that one or even several of the players Dallas cut from the depth chart at these positions will be cut in the early rounds of the NFL Draft and possibly at the start of free agency. This is a reflection of the fact that Dallas was so heavily involved in free agency that there are more than enough names that could be cut by the Cowboys during the season even if their team doesn’t make the Super Bowl. Here we go, we get to take a closer look at the Cowboys offseason roster:
Injured: Jason Hatcher, Darnell Dockett, Michael Williams, Bruce Carter, James Hanna. Injured Reserve: K.J. Dillon, Shawn Williams, Gavin Escobar, Sam Roos, Corey Nola. That’s it for starters. If you look down deep, you should still find some of those undrafted players, like Tyler Shatley and Demarcus Lawrence, who could have been part of some interesting battles in the preseason or training camp if they weren’t injured. But there are a ton of unimpressive rookies that the Cowboys are currently hanging onto like a house of cards.
The Cowboys spent three or four years (at least) trying to draft and develop players like A.J. Cann (who was also injured), Jason Hatcher, James Hanna, A.J. Cann, Justin Durant and the other guys that they have been hanging onto recently. I say they’ve been hanging onto them for too long. There has to be more out there. Just like the Raiders, who spent seven years trying to work out a solution for what to do with Amari Cooper since they didn’t have a single pick in the draft, the Cowboys are also stuck with Jason Hatcher the entire time they have been dealing with injuries. The only question seems to be is it time to trade him for more picks?
I won’t get into any of the other players that the Cowboys have been holding onto too long at a position that could be of great value like the inside linebackers. But the Cowboys, like the other NFL teams (for all who have been following), have been losing more players each offseason than they are winning in the draft. It’s a situation that seems to be just getting worse every week.
I’ll be posting on Twitter @PFF_Chinacq. Keep the conversation going there and be sure to use hashtag #PFFChinch for my follow ups on specific topics. I would also like to take a moment to thank the players for making my job as a writer an enjoyable one. And I still get a good amount of content on Twitter as well. So if you have a question, or I have some kind of a question for any of you guys, just shoot me a comment, send me an email, tweet me at @PFF_Chinacq, or give me a shout on at Twitter. I love hearing from new and old Cowboys fans alike.
